Abstract

A literature review was conducted on the role of emotions in men diagnosed with an STD. The findings consisted of twenty-two studies, mostly Latin American and qualitative. They were organized into eight themes: 1. Prejudices and stigmas around the disease; 2. Emotional shock, disappointment, anguish, anxiety and uncertainty resulting from waiting for and confirming the diagnosis; 3. Fear, shame and blame for the implications of living with an STD; 4. Depression, suicidal ideation and alterations in self-esteem and self-image; 5. Risk behaviors promoted by sexual love and pleasure; 6. Changes in understanding about the disease; 7. Emotional evolution of the diagnosed; 8. Post-diagnosis behavioral ambivalence. Emotions such as fear, anxiety, shame, depression, and uncertainty awaiting diagnosis and during the experience with the diagnosed STD were the most common. Negative emotions diminish as individuals acquire information from doctors. Emotions such as love favor the appearance of risky sexual behaviors in men. Finally, stigmatized and erroneous information will lead to an unpleasant emotional and cognitive experience, and increased likelihood of behaviors that affect the health of males and others.
