Abstract

The objective of this systematic review is to share the state of the art on the topic of social representations of mental health from 14 empirical articles on the topic including key concepts such as mental illness, normality-abnormality and madness, of which were identified and analyzed the thematic categories, as well as the axes of discussion to address in future research. The systematic review was carried out using the methodological design of “Scoping Review” by Arksey and O'Malley (2005). In studies from a structural perspective, concepts of a category of imperturbability such as well-being, stability and tranquility were mainly found included in the central core of the representations. In studies from a processual perspective, different aspects were identified in the content of the representation such as habits, healthy practices, social context, accessibility, resources, stigmatization, gender and community needs. Little depth was found in the study in general from a gender perspective, as well as non-captive, lay populations, and a lack of articulation of the results with the context of the population investigated.
