Abstract

Relational Frame Theory (RFT) posits that human language and cognition emerge from the learned ability to relate stimuli. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between relational skills and IQ in university students. The study employed a quantitative, non-experimental and correlational desing. Fifty-three university students participated, completing the Relational Abilities Index (RAI) and subtests of the WAIS-IV. The results showed significant correlations between subtests of the RAI and the WAIS-IV, highlighting associations between Analogies and Before/After (r = .637, p < .001), Before/After and Greater/Lesser (r = .611, p < .001), as well as Equal/Different and Greater/Lesser (r = .556, p < .001). These relationships suggest that tasks involving identifying oppositions, sequences, or magnitudes share a relational and comparative reasoning component. Moderate correlations were observed between Matrices and Greater/Lesser (r = .383, p < .001) and between Block Design and Same/Different (r = .385, p < .001), indicating that logical and spatial reasoning is also linked to the ability to establish relationships. Taken together, these findings are consistent with previous research that has documented a close association between performance on relational tasks and fluid intelligence.
