Relationship between relational ability and academic aptitude in university students

Keywords: relational frames theory, academic aptitude, relational ability index, university students

Abstract

Relational frame theory proposes that relational behavior is the process of responding to stimuli in terms of their arbitrary, contextually controlled relationship to one another. The arbitrary relationship is formed through a learning process and the ability to derive relationships between stimuli and events independently of their physical characteristics and in the absence of any direct instructions to do so. This behavior may be the basis of intellectual performance and consequently be related to academic performance. It is inferred that relational ability may be related to academic performance; therefore, the objective of the study was to analyze the relationship between relational ability evaluated by the RAI test and the Academic Aptitude Test (PAEP). 31 university students participated voluntarily. The tests were applied through the Zoom and Moodle platforms. Higher scores were found in the RAI test compared to the PAEP test. A negative and weak correlation was obtained between the tests, which is explained by the multidimensional and multilevel conceptual model. It is concluded that the relationship studied represents a field of research little studied and that it may be relevant for the development of a way to improve the academic skills of students.
